Hello Twirlers!
Welcome to Twirls. Our objective for lessons is learning twirls that will be measured with compulsory evaluations. If you would like to apply the twirls and tricks for entertainment or competition, solo strut, basic strut, and United Dtates Twirling Association (USTA) competition strut routines can be incorporated into class. For those interested in choreography, instruction on the art of pairing movement with music is available.
Compulsories are foundations for routines and demonstrate the skill level an athlete has achieved. When a twirler is ready, the athlete will follow the appropriate USTA level compulsory for Coach Jessica. Upon successful completion, the twirler will receive certificate documentation.
Four consecutive twirls of each contact twirl will be performed. Athletes must begin in a two hand hold position in front at waist level and finish in this pose. Body position should have erect posture, head straight forward, feet together in jazz first or ballet sixth position, free hand on hip with fingers together.
Athletes will be marked using the NISE scale. NI: Needs Improvement, S: Satisfactory, E: Excellent. Focus at this level is on the basic twirl itself, not the entrance and exit of the twirl. More detailed information will be going out on the compulsories that will be demonstrated two weeks before evaluations.
Skills for assessment include wrist flexibility, arm flexibility, manual grip, arm extension, manual transfer (pass), full hand, vertical and horizontal patterns.
Class structure will consist of 5 minutes of stretching, 10 minutes of baton basics and trick work, 5 minute break, 5 to 10 minutes of review and cool down. This will transition after two lessons to 15 minutes of routine choreography if the athlete chooses.
Batons will be available for use. But to ensure you have the proper size and will be able to practice at home, please contact Coach Jessica for measurements and ordering.
